The Ecological Self

“Care flows naturally if the self is widened…” Arne Naess

Inspired by the living landscapes and animals of southern Saskatchewan, integral education, eco-psychology, and the contemplative & expressive arts, this four-week course is intended as a portal to greater intimacy with self, other & the ‘more-than-human’ world. The invitation of the course is a deepening into the felt-experience of belonging and re-membering our place in the family of things. Through readings, discussions, creative and meditative experiential exercises in nature, we’ll explore our innate capacity for presence and connection. Moving away from the idea of a separate self, we’ll cultivate relationship with our inner and outer landscapes.

SHARED GROUND OF BEING

Hawk circling over quonset, storm building, Val Marie, Saskatchewan

Gentle yet powerful assisted self-study

Mindfulness-centered somatic counseling

This gently guided one-on-one work focuses on present moment experience and uses mindfulness to uncover how past experiences shape current emotions and behaviours, facilitating healing and self-discovery. Although sessions include talking, emphasis is on an experiential approach, based in the body, which goes beyond words to access that which defines and shapes day-to-day experience. Previously unconscious material comes to conscious awareness to be worked with, transforming the way we experience life.

“Eco” comes from the Greek word oikos, meaning home. Ecology is the study of home, while economics is the management of home. Ecologists attempt to define the conditions and principles that govern life’s ability to flourish through time and change. Societies and our constructs, like economics, must adapt to those fundamentals defined by ecology. The challenge today is to put the “eco” back into economics and every aspect of our lives.”
